One way to make portraits unconventional is to do something with eye contact. Looking at the lense can make it feel more intimate, looking away adds a sense of mystery, and looking at something actually in the frame adds a sense of story. Like any photo, breaking rules effectively can add to the photo in a number of ways. Getting close up on one part of the person is very unconventional and un-plain. The use of props of course says a lot about the person. Lastly, portraying them in their natural environment doing something that they normally do (shooting candidly) says a lot about them and is also unconventional. The portraits shown are unusual because they both portray the subjects doing something instead of a plain portrait, and also unlike a plain portrait, they have unusual composition. None of these are traditional because they don’t have just a subject and a background. They are either oddly composed, actually doing something or both. I can plan to make mine unconventional by having no eye contact; looking off camera and trying to make it look un-posed.

i do find that some of these photos are traditional or un-original but if you can make the person your shooting get out of there comfort zone, shoot from different angle, experiment with the lighting, try to make it look more organic or just dont pose for the shot, add props.
